Villa Vie Residences suspended operations for the Odyssey, a vessel serving as a permanent home for hundreds of residents, while docked in Cambodia. The Florida-based company attributed the pause to a steep increase in energy expenses that outpaced its ability to cover operating losses.

The ship departed two years ago on a three-year itinerary covering all seven continents. Villa Vie stated that monthly fuel costs per cabin, which historically averaged $1,800, recently reached an estimated $6,000 to $8,000 in parts of Asia. The company linked this surge to the war in Iran. It reported that efforts to reduce consumption by slowing the schedule and increasing port stays failed to offset the price jump.

"We have been unable to continue carrying the resulting operating losses," the company said. It noted that transferring the full cost increase to residents was not realistic. "Our focus now is on supporting residents, crew, and employees" while the company works to restructure.

Sihanoukville Autonomous Port confirmed the vessel arrived on Oct. 23 for a five-day visit. The Odyssey was scheduled to proceed to Vietnam but remained in port on Wednesday. The ship carried 203 passengers from 15 countries, primarily Americans, and 156 crew members. Passengers have been instructed to disembark, while the status of the crew remained unclear.

The Odyssey had a confirmed itinerary extending into November 2027. Villa Vie had also planned to launch a second residential cruise ship in early 2029. The suspension announcement did not specify what would happen to that future vessel.
