Teresa Benitez-Thompson learned at 3:00 a.m. on Nov. 4 that she had won Nevada’s 2nd Congressional District. The result ended a four-decade Republican hold on the seat, which has been represented by a Republican since its creation in the 1980s.

Benitez-Thompson defeated Republican David Flippo in a race where analysts predicted a loss. The district contains more registered Republicans than Democrats and covers one of the largest geographic areas in the House of Representatives.

The winner stated she spent the campaign visiting all corners of the district, from north to south and east to west. She said she focused on listening to residents discuss their economic challenges rather than waiting for a national trend to carry her to victory.

“I did not just sit around,” Benitez-Thompson said. “I did what I always do. I put my head down every day and did the work. And I had conversations. I hope that’s not lost on this.”

She pointed to specific household expenses to illustrate the cost of living. Benitez-Thompson noted that a gallon of milk at her local store recently cost over $7.00. She also highlighted that many families in the district face high insurance premiums and co-pays, leading some to skip necessary healthcare.

A major concern for the new representative is the early termination of SNAP benefits for many Nevadans next year. Benitez-Thompson said voters effectively instructed Democratic lawmakers on Nov. 3 to lower the cost of living for struggling families.

Benitez-Thompson will travel to Washington, D.C. next week for orientation. She plans to review proposed legislation to determine its specific impact on her constituents. The mother of four said she intends to ensure Congress continues to consider the financial pressures faced by families like hers.
