Shooting incidents in retail stores have drawn national attention following a deadly incident at a Spirit Halloween location in California. Solano County prosecutors announced charges against a 17-year-old accused of killing a pregnant woman and wounding six other people.
The district attorney's office filed two counts of murder, three counts of attempted murder, and three counts of assault with a semiautomatic firearm against the teenager. The filing also includes several weapons enhancements. Prosecutors have formally requested that the juvenile be tried as an adult in criminal court.
The shooting occurred on October 30 and claimed the lives of Constance Hages, 31, and her unborn child. Hages was a mother of four. Six other individuals sustained injuries during the attack.
As of Monday, four victims remained hospitalized. A 19-year-old man is listed in critical condition, while three others, aged 16, 23, and 32, are in stable condition. Two additional victims, aged 19 and 43, were treated and released from the hospital.
Hages' family organized a GoFundMe page to cover funeral costs and support her four children. They described the loss as heartbreaking, noting the family is trying to face a pain that words can barely hold.
The accused appeared in juvenile court on Wednesday morning for an initial hearing. The teen remains held without bail pending further proceedings.
