East Lansing Police Chief Jennifer Brown confirmed on Sunday that two separate shootings on Halloween night left five people injured near the Michigan State University campus.
Officers first responded to a reported shooting near the intersection of M.A.C. Avenue and Linden Street. Multiple shots were fired in that incident, and three people were transported to the hospital with gunshot wounds. Two of those victims are in stable condition, while the status of the third has not yet been determined.
Later that night, police responded to a second shooting in the area of Stoddard and Frye Avenues. Two additional people were shot in that incident, and both are currently listed in stable condition. Brown stated that multiple guns were recovered from the scene, though officials have not confirmed whether those specific weapons were used in the attacks.
The chief said several individuals were taken into custody in connection with the violence. Police have not determined if the two shootings are linked or if any of the victims are MSU students.
An MSU spokesperson noted that the Department of Police and Public Safety assisted East Lansing police but stated the criminal activity did not involve a threat to campus or take place on MSU property. Brown added that the East Lansing Fire Department handled 91 total incidents over a 24-hour period, with 75 of those occurring on Halloween night.
