Santa Fe Christian Schools connected high school students with professionals from medicine, law, technology, finance, marketing, and business during its second annual Career Day on Oct. 22. The event was organized by Jen Brekke, a business strategist and Tunnel to Towers board member.

The day began with industry panels where students heard from various sector leaders. Following the large group sessions, students moved into smaller breakout meetings. In these sessions, they asked questions and explored specific career interests with the speakers.

Speakers frequently discussed career changes, setbacks, and unexpected opportunities. They emphasized that while academic preparation is important, traits like communication, curiosity, adaptability, integrity, and perseverance are valuable in the workplace.

Tiffany Nikkel, vice president of sales for obesity and related conditions at Amgen, told the school that students do not need to have their futures mapped out immediately. She noted that the skills they build and the self-discovery they pursue now will serve them throughout their lives.

Senior Chase Woolley said the event encouraged him. He stated that it is okay to still be figuring things out. He also noted that SFC has taught him that challenges help people grow and that skills like teamwork and a willingness to learn matter in any career.

Gretchen M. Shipley, managing partner of the San Diego office of Fagen Friedman & Fulfrost LLP, praised the students' thoughtful questions. Steve Hendren, vice president and managing director of TaylorMade Golf in the United States, emphasized the importance of relationships, communication, and curiosity. He encouraged students to trust the plan that God has for them.

Brekke said the goal was to help students see that there is not just one path to a successful career. She wanted students to leave with a wider view of what is possible and to recognize the value of building relationships in their own community.
