The number that is reshaping the landscape of venture capital is 965. This is the figure, in billions of dollars, that represents Anthropic's latest private market valuation. While the company is widely expected to go public later this year, potentially at a valuation of up to 2 trillion dollars, the current private price tag has already created a significant windfall for a specific group of insiders. The stakes held by various venture capital firms and early backers now total billions of dollars. According to data from Bloomberg, the financial positions of these key investors have shifted dramatically since the company's earlier funding rounds.

One of the most notable figures in this equation is Eric Schmidt, the former chief executive of Google. His involvement dates back to 2021, when he participated in Anthropic's Series A funding. At that time, PitchBook data indicates the startup was valued at a mere 461 million dollars. Fast forward to the present day, and Schmidt holds approximately 1 percent of the company. Even before a public listing occurs, his share is valued at nearly 10 billion dollars. This trajectory highlights the sheer scale of growth the artificial intelligence lab has experienced in a short period.

The late-stage investor Iconiq has also reaped substantial returns from its involvement with the AI firm. Last year, the investment outfit wrote a check for 6 billion dollars to Anthropic. This occurred after the company had already reached a valuation of 183 billion dollars. That massive bet has since grown to a current value of 17 billion dollars. Analysts suggest that if the initial public offering materializes at the higher end of expected valuations, this position could potentially double again.

Menlo Ventures, which led Anthropic's Series D round, has deepened its commitment over time. The firm has invested more than 1 billion dollars in the company across various stages. Their accumulated stake is now worth approximately 14 billion dollars. This long-term engagement has allowed them to capture a significant portion of the value creation as the company scaled its operations and influence in the artificial intelligence sector.

Sequoia, a firm often associated with early-stage bets, took a different approach with Anthropic. They first backed the AI lab earlier this year, at a point when the company was already valued at 380 billion dollars. Despite entering late in the growth cycle, Sequoia's 3 billion dollar investment secured them about 1 percent ownership. This late entry has already resulted in more than doubling their initial investment, a testament to the rapid appreciation of the company's equity.

Sound Ventures, a firm launched by Guy Oseary and actor Ashton Kutcher, has also seen its portfolio value surge. The firm initially invested 35 million dollars in Anthropic's 2023 Series C round. Since that time, they have funneled an additional 400 million dollars into the company. This sustained capital injection has resulted in a stake that is now worth billions of dollars. It is worth noting that Kutcher left Sound Ventures this year to launch a new venture capital firm, though the firm's existing holdings remain part of the current valuation narrative.

Perhaps the most striking return on investment belongs to Spark Capital. This firm is currently the only venture capital group known to hold a board seat at Anthropic. Their initial entry into the company occurred during the same 2023 Series C round, when Anthropic was valued at 5 billion dollars. Spark Capital invested 75 million dollars at that time. That position has since ballooned more than ninetyfold, reaching a current value of 7 billion dollars. Such a multiple is rare in modern venture capital and underscores the explosive nature of the AI boom.

These figures illustrate the financial stakes involved in the upcoming public listing. For investors who entered at various stages, from the 461 million dollar valuation of 2021 to the 380 billion dollar mark of this year, the potential for further growth remains significant. The anticipated 2 trillion dollar IPO valuation could transform these already substantial holdings into historic windfalls. As the date for the public offering approaches, the focus remains on how the market will react to the valuations already established in the private sector.
