More than 6,000 connectors and plug-ins are now available for a new artificial intelligence application entering the crowded assistant market. Anthropic introduced Claude Duet on Wednesday, positioning it as a specialized tool for professionals and small businesses rather than a general personal assistant. The move places the company in direct competition with several other major players, including Meta Muse, OpenAI Dots, Hark, Instinct, Grok Bot, and Fo. This launch represents a significant step in the broader shift toward autonomous agents that can manage complex workflows on behalf of their users.

The company emphasizes that Duet is distinct from consumer facing agents like Instinct. Anthropic notes that the new app is not designed to handle simple errands, such as booking tickets, nor can it display its browser usage in real time. Instead, the system focuses on building daily briefings, creating data dashboards, and suggesting strategic actions based on user information. It operates within its own virtual machine to complete tasks in the background, allowing users to continue their work while the agent processes data. If a specific decision is required, the agent will return to request user approval before proceeding.

This business centric approach mirrors trends among Anthropic’s competitors. Meta has released a version of Muse specifically for small businesses with app integrations, while OpenAI’s Dots features a professional slant with connections to workplace tools. By targeting the corporate and small business sectors, Anthropic aims to capture a segment that values efficiency and automation over casual personal assistance. The underlying technology for Duet is the Claude Opus 5.5 model, which powers its ability to connect with a vast ecosystem of third party services.

Security and financial safety are central features of the new platform. Anthropic introduced a new classifier that scans each message to prevent sensitive information from leaking out. By default, the agent will decline requests that ask for credit card numbers or government identification documents. While Duet can make online purchases on a user’s behalf using Stripe’s Link digital wallet or Shopify’s Shop Pay, it does not trade securities or move money between bank accounts. Sensitive steps, particularly those involving payments, always require explicit user approval to ensure control remains with the human operator.

Reactions from the industry suggest that the focus on specific business use cases is becoming the standard for the next generation of AI agents. The ability to proactively deliver recommendations while monitoring ongoing tasks sets a new expectation for productivity tools. Anthropic’s decision to limit the agent’s financial powers to purchases rather than broader financial management reflects a cautious approach to user trust. The classifier feature addresses a common concern regarding data privacy in connected systems, aiming to make enterprise adoption more appealing.

The platform is currently accessible as a research preview for Pro and Max customers. Users can access the service through the web interface at Claude.ai or via dedicated applications for iOS and Android. Access is restricted to those who join a waitlist, indicating that the company is managing rollout carefully. This phased launch allows Anthropic to gather feedback and refine the agent’s performance in real world business scenarios before a wider release. The waitlist system also helps manage server load and ensures that early users have a stable experience during the initial testing period.

What happens next will depend on how effectively Duet can maintain its focus on professional tasks while competing with more generalist assistants. The integration of over 6,000 connectors provides a strong foundation for versatility, but the success of the app will hinge on its ability to execute background tasks reliably. As the market moves beyond simple chat bots to agents that act with autonomy, the distinction between personal and business tools is becoming increasingly important. Anthropic’s entry into this space signals that the race to build the most useful workplace agent is intensifying, with several major technology companies investing heavily in this area this year.
