Russell Brand entered Southwark Crown Court in London on Wednesday to take the witness stand in his own defense. The 51-year-old British actor-comedian appeared alongside his wife, Laura Gallacher. He told reporters outside the court that the day was dedicated to truth and justice.

Brand faces seven charges stemming from allegations by six women. The accusations cover a ten-year period from 1999 to 2009. Prosecutors allege that Brand committed three counts of rape, three counts of sexual assault, and one count of attempted indecent assault. During his testimony, his lawyer, Ian Winter, asked Brand about each specific charge. The comedian answered no to every count, maintaining that he did not force any of the alleged victims to act against their will.

While on the stand, Brand described his relationship with sex during his earlier career. He acknowledged that he had been obsessed with sex as a younger man. He told the court that he had engaged in what he called beyond reckless philandering. Brand stated that as he became more famous, he allowed that fame to facilitate sexual access. He agreed with the prosecutor that this approach was wrong, though he denied being desperate for sex or unable to function without it.

The trial has already heard testimony from the six women accusing Brand. Prosecutor Riel Karmy-Jones characterized the defendant as ruthless and calculating. She described him as a sexual predator in the eyes of the prosecution. The victims do not know one another. They contacted police separately after a television documentary aired in 2023. The documentary featured anonymous allegations of sexual misconduct against Brand.

Brand argued that the legal process has had a devastating impact on his life. He stated that friends and colleagues abandoned him during the proceedings. He noted that no one with relevant evidence was willing to testify in his support. Brand said the allegations consumed his entire existence. He claimed the stress of the case came at the expense of his marriage, his children, and his health.

One specific consequence cited by Brand involved his son. The comedian said he was barred from staying with his baby son at Great Ormond Street Hospital. His son was receiving open heart surgery and subsequent treatment at the time. Brand stated that the hospital cited the material published in the 2023 documentary and newspaper articles as the reason for the ban.

The specific allegations vary by location and year. One woman alleges Brand raped her in a hotel room in Bournemouth in 1999. Another claims he tried to drag her into a men's bathroom at an MTV office in London in 2001. A third alleges oral rape in a London bar toilet in 2004. A fourth says he kissed and groped her at a London radio station in 2004 or 2005. Two women allege incidents in 2009, including one at Brand's home and another during an advertisement recording.

Brand rose to prominence in the early 2000s with stand-up comedy and television hosting roles. He appeared in films such as Forgetting Sarah Marshall and Get Him to the Greek. He was previously married to pop star Katy Perry. In recent years, Brand moved to Florida and shifted his focus to online videos. These videos mix wellness topics with discussions of conspiracy theories and religious devotion.

British law protects the identities of the alleged victims from media coverage for life. The Associated Press also does not name victims of alleged sexual violence. Brand completed his first day of testimony by reaffirming his plea. He told the court that not guilty is his plea in every single case.
