Commissioner Joe Knight reported from his home on Monday that he is two weeks post heart surgery and making steady progress. He joined the Jefferson County Commission chamber via Zoom for the final regular meeting of the four year cycle. Knight told the four in person members that his strength is returning and thanked them for their support.

Knight described his recovery process, noting that his wife is managing his care. He referred to her as his Nurse Ratchet and his Florence Nightingale. The District 4 member also extended good luck wishes to Commission President Jimmie Stephens, who faces Democratic nominee Camara Blue in Tuesday's election. Stephens is the only commissioner whose seat is contested.

The current commission cycle ends Tuesday as voters head to the polls. Knight indicated he has a follow up appointment with his surgeon scheduled for Thursday. He stated he will continue his recovery journey with good spirits and plans to reunite with the full board next Wednesday.

The next major event for the board is the organizational meeting set for November 11. Although that date falls on the federal Veterans Day holiday, state law requires the commission to convene to swear in commissioners and assign committees. The downtown courthouse will be open specifically for the 9 a.m. session.

During Monday's combined committee and commission session, members approved one item of new business. Commissioner Sheila Tyson allocated a $25,000 community grant from her discretionary account. The funds will go to Exposure Community Development Corporation to support musical programs honoring military veterans in Jefferson County.
