New York Democrats secured a commanding position in the federal government following Tuesday's midterm elections.

The party captured at least seven Senate seats and more than two dozen House districts nationwide. This electoral realignment includes a critical pickup in New York suburbs, giving New York leaders direct control over both chambers of Congress.

Gov. Kathy Hochul framed the outcome as a strategic advantage for state funding. At a Monday night event in Williamsburg, she predicted she would soon contact House Speaker Hakeem Jeffries and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer to request billions of dollars for New York.

The shift in power places immediate pressure on federal spending for major local projects. State officials now anticipate renewed federal support for the $16 billion Gateway Program, the Penn Station overhaul, and the Second Avenue Subway. They also expect that recent Republican cuts to health care and food stamps may be softened by the new majority.

Inside the state government, a stronger left wing of the Democratic Party is preparing to push for more aggressive fiscal policies. The Democratic Socialists of America doubled its representation in the state Legislature. Grace Mauser, the DSA's local co-chair, stated that her group will hold the governor accountable for taxing the rich and expanding childcare.

Jasmine Gripper, co-executive director of the Working Families Party, told The City that the state budget fight begins immediately. She said the party will only accept a budget that taxes the ultra-rich to support working families. Hochul thanked Mayor Zohran Mamdani for his support during the campaign, acknowledging the energy from the party's base.

In the new House majority, leaders are planning rapid oversight actions against the Trump administration. Rep. Grace Meng of Queens described the win as a mandate to act fast. She said Democrats will grill key administration members under oath and slash funding for Immigration Customs and Enforcement. Rep.-elect Micah Lasher of Manhattan said he speaks daily with predecessor Jerrold Nadler about using judicial committee powers to review administration actions.

For Hochul, the victory also serves as a political correction for the 2022 midterms. That year, she ran at the top of the ticket and state Democrats lost five House seats and their majority. In the weeks leading up to the election, she campaigned across the state and New York City, aligning with Mamdani and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez to boost turnout.
