Texas has not sent a Democrat to the U.S. Senate in more than three decades, a streak that ended on Tuesday night. James Talarico defeated Attorney General Ken Paxton by nearly 10 points, securing the seat for his party after a long and contested race.

Talarico framed his victory as a defeat for established power structures. Standing before a crowd at the Long Center in Austin, he compared the campaign to the biblical story of David and Goliath. He identified his opponents as the wealthiest individuals in the world and the Washington establishment.

"David wasn’t as big or as strong as Goliath. He didn’t have as many weapons, but he had hope, he had faith, and he had a slingshot. You were my slingshot. The people of Texas were my slingshot. And tonight, we defeated Goliath," Talarico told the audience.

The candidate’s strategy leaned heavily on his religious faith, a move that Lloyd Hocutt, a resident of Austin since 1995, said helped attract Independent and Republican voters. Hocutt, who has never lived through the election of a Democratic senator in Texas, praised Talarico for sticking to his message.

"I think he’s a true believer in his faith, and he hasn’t backed away from it or shied away from it. And some people may be turned off to that, but I welcome it," Hocutt said. "I thought it was really good for him to keep doing that the entire time."

Talarico’s campaign faced substantial financial opposition. Elon Musk poured approximately $200 million into the race, and the Republican Party released artificial intelligence attack ads designed to damage Talarico’s reputation. Talarico referred to these efforts as the final howls of a dying establishment. He stated that the next step is to continue flipping political tables.

The new senator plans to bring his message of unity to the nation’s capital. He argued that division cannot defeat division. "We can’t defeat the politics of division with more division. We can’t win that game. We have to change the game," he said.
