The San Diego Unified School District is urging families to prioritize daily reading and writing activities to support student development. As November arrives, designated as National Family Literacy Month, the district is emphasizing the connection between shared family time and academic skills.
The initiative builds on the district's long-standing focus on early language development. The district previously highlighted the importance of vocabulary and comprehension in early education. This annual push aligns with those earlier recommendations by providing specific, low-cost activities for households to implement at home.
The district's guide suggests starting with a 15-minute daily reading session. It states that this duration helps build memory, attention span, and background knowledge. Families are also encouraged to visit local public libraries to obtain cards for all members, ensuring access to materials outside the classroom.
Beyond reading, the district recommends collaborative writing tasks. These include maintaining a family journal where each member contributes a daily entry, creating a family blog, or compiling lists for weekly groceries and recipes. The guide also suggests creating a photo book with captions or hosting sessions where family members tell personal or fictional stories.
The district has released a bilingual family activity guide to assist households. It invites families to share feedback on how the district can best support their participation in these literacy opportunities. The materials are available to all San Diego Unified families as the month progresses.
