San Diego County health officials confirmed the deaths of two children this month, marking an early and intense start to the 2026 influenza season. The victims were a previously healthy 11-year-old and an infant with complex medical conditions.
The county’s weekly Respiratory Virus Surveillance Report lists these two pediatric cases among 11 total flu-related deaths and 516 hospitalizations recorded since the season began. A year ago at the same time, officials had logged two deaths and 86 hospitalizations. The report indicates a sharp rise in positive influenza tests, with the highest rates found among children between the ages of 5 and 17.
County Public Health Officer Sayone Thihalolipavan, MD, MPH, addressed the impact of the early losses. “As a father myself, hearing about the deaths of two children is especially difficult and underscores the importance of prevention,” Thihalolipavan said. “Flu vaccines are safe, effective and the best way to protect yourself and your loved ones from serious illness.”
Health experts advise that everyone aged 6 months and older receive a flu vaccine. Immunity typically takes two weeks to develop after vaccination. Officials urge individuals with underlying health conditions to get vaccinated immediately to reduce the risk of severe infection.
Pia Pannaraj, MD, MPH, an infectious disease specialist at Rady Children’s Hospital San Diego, commented on the hospital’s response. “Every day in our hospital, we see how swiftly severe infections can progress in children. Our entire care team is heartbroken by the loss of these two young lives,” Pannaraj said. “Keeping your child vaccinated is the single best step you can take to shield them from life-threatening illness.”
Vaccinations are available at retail pharmacies, urgent care centers, hospitals, and health clinics across the region. County public health clinics also provide shots for uninsured residents. Appointments can be booked through the My Turn California Vaccine Scheduling and Information Site. The full surveillance data is available as a downloadable PDF for those who subscribe to the online report.
To limit the spread of respiratory viruses, officials recommend frequent hand washing with soap and water or the use of sanitizer when soap is unavailable. They advise avoiding close contact with sick individuals and staying home when symptomatic. Cleaning frequently touched surfaces and wearing masks around others who are ill are also recommended steps.
