Drivers near the San Ysidro border crossing faced closures and detours after a high-speed chase ended in the area on Wednesday night. The California Highway Patrol shut down the port around 9:20 p.m. for an unspecified time, telling motorists to take alternate routes or cross at Otay Mesa instead.
The incident began at approximately 6:46 p.m. when Riverside County Sheriff's deputies attempted to stop a stolen vehicle in Jurupa Valley. The location was near Van Buren Boulevard and Clay Street. The driver did not yield, so the pursuit started. The chase moved through Jurupa Valley and onto westbound State Route 91 before continuing south onto Interstate 5.
The vehicle crossed into San Diego County and traveled south until it reached San Ysidro. Law enforcement officers arrested the suspect near the international border. The agency has not yet confirmed the suspect's condition. Aviation crews and a K-9 unit assisted during the pursuit. No deputies from the Riverside County Sheriff's Office were injured.
The crash blocked lanes on southbound I-5 at Camino De La Plaza. Caltrans reported this blockage around 8:45 p.m. Traffic was diverted to State Route 905. By 8 p.m., multiple officers and an ambulance were visible in the lanes near the border crossing.
San Diego police are investigating the shooting that occurred during the incident. The Riverside County Sheriff's Office confirmed the details of the pursuit and the arrest. No further information was available at the time of reporting.
