The Los Angeles Rams defeated the Los Angeles Chargers 24 to 9 in a game defined by defensive dominance and an offensive struggle that lasted nearly half the contest. The defense forced four turnovers and limited the Chargers to 295 total yards, securing the victory despite a passing offense that failed to convert a single first down in its first five possessions.
Quarterback Matthew Stafford did not record a first down until a two-minute drive at the end of the first half. The Rams offense gained only 28 minutes of first-down progress before the defense's interception return by safety Quentin Lake for 45 yards exceeded the team's total offensive yardage. Head coach Sean McVay noted that the offense established no rhythm until that late first-half sequence, which resulted in a touchdown.
Linebacker Omar Speights stated that the defensive unit focuses on getting stops and turnovers regardless of offensive performance. The defense held the Chargers to 2.6 yards per carry and stopped them on 60% of third-down attempts. They prevented the Chargers from scoring a touchdown, stopping them short of the red zone four times and allowing only one field goal attempt.
Cornerback Trent McDuffie returned from a two-game absence due to a groin injury to make a significant impact. He recorded eight of his first nine tackles for gains of five yards or fewer. His interception in the third quarter set up a screen-pass touchdown for Puka Nacua, extending the lead. McVay praised McDuffie for his activity in run fits and coverage, noting the player was excellent throughout the contest.
The defense's performance was not without minor issues. Aaron Donald failed to secure a fumble forced by Wesley Bailey, allowing the ball to bounce out of bounds. Donald lay on the field in apparent embarrassment while teammate Braden Fiske mimed performing CPR on him. McVay joked that he would tease Donald about the miss, acknowledging the need to laugh about the moment.
The offense found some success through the running game late in the first half and early in the second. Blake Corum carried the ball five times for 55 yards, including a 23-yard touchdown, after the team had committed to the run. Kyren Williams also saw a pair of early carries for nine yards on the following drive. However, the Rams punted after four dropbacks on that drive, highlighting the continued inconsistency in the passing attack.
Stafford admitted the team missed on several throws into tight coverage. He stated that the offense will continue to build on the experience. Nacua emphasized the need for the offense to execute better to complement the defensive effort. The Rams finished the season segment with a 4-4 record, while the Chargers fell to 0-7.
