Rams Weigh Rostering Karty Alongside McManus for Chargers Game
Los Angeles is deciding whether to add a second kicker by Saturday amid kickoff coverage breakdowns and injury designations.

The Rams are deciding whether to carry two kickers for Sunday's home game against the Los Angeles Chargers, a move that would require elevating Josh Karty from the practice squad by Saturday. Head coach Sean McVay has not committed to the plan as the team weighs 48 game-day roster spots against in-game injury contingencies. The Rams enter the week at 3-4; the Chargers are 0-6.
Karty's first stint ended after two blocked field goal attempts in a 2025 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles, including a potential game-winner, which cost the organization confidence in his protection. He was replaced midseason by Harrison Mevis. Brandon McManus was signed one week ago and handles kicking duties now.
Kickoff coverage has produced a separate cost. The Raiders returned kicks for 36 and 42 yards last Sunday before McVay instructed McManus to drive the ball into the end zone for touchbacks. Starting drives at the 35-yard line is not sustainable over a full season, and players have drifted out of their lanes, opening gaps for returners. McManus placed one 42-yard return correctly in the corner of the landing zone.
Karty's kickoffs bounce and spin in ways that have troubled returners. Against Philadelphia, the Eagles could not field his kickoffs cleanly, and the crowd reacted. He said the Rams might use that skill in a new way. "I think something that I have that he hasn't showcased is the kickoffs, so I think that we might try and do something with that," Karty said Wednesday. "Figuring it out myself, too."
McVay addressed the roster math Friday. "When you have 48 guys up on game day, what is that contributing factor that when you come out of that game and you also have to be ready for contingency plans if injuries occur within the game? What does that look like?" he said. "And those are things that you kind of work through."
Several designations could affect the decision. Center Coleman Shelton (hip), tight end Colby Parkinson (ribs), cornerback Trent McDuffie (groin) and receiver Jordan Whittington (back) are questionable. Long snapper Joe Cardona is listed as doubtful with an ankle injury; Jake McQuaide would take his place if elevated from the practice squad.
Roster decisions must be final by Saturday for Sunday's kickoff. Any Karty elevation has to be filed before then, and the Chargers game is scheduled for Sunday.
