Lucie Kon, an Oscar and Emmy-winning producer, has received a settlement of more than £400,000 from the BBC. The payment concludes her legal case following her departure from the broadcaster in April. The BBC did not admit fault in the agreement, nor did it offer a formal apology for the events that led to Kon's exit.

The dispute began in the weeks following the October 7 attacks. Kon described a change in how she was treated by colleagues after she mentioned the attacks on WhatsApp. One colleague responded by saying that "Zionists" were evil. Kon later argued that when she suggested calling Hamas terrorists, a different colleague insisted she must also label Israel a terrorist state to remain balanced.

Kon helped organize a WhatsApp group for Jewish employees and wrote to Director General Tim Davie to voice her concerns. She then proposed a documentary about the October 7 attacks. Her manager initially approved the project but required contextualization of the Hamas actions. When Kon pushed back, a senior manager told her she was no longer overseeing the film because she was Jewish and therefore partial. The colleague who had previously made the remark about Zionists was assigned to supervise the project instead.

After Kon raised a formal grievance, the colleague involved removed themselves from meetings with Kon. Kon was instructed to stay out of the office. Six months later, the BBC ruled that her grievance was not upheld, citing concerns about her mental health rather than antisemitic bias. Her appeal was also rejected. During this period, the BBC restricted her ability to travel, commission work, or speak on behalf of the corporation to protect her colleague's position.

Kon took stress-related sick leave in December. Upon her return, she applied for a newly created role but was rejected. The BBC placed her at risk of redundancy in April. She subsequently filed for unfair dismissal. The settlement is partly funded by the license fee. This marks the first known settlement by the BBC for an employee alleging antisemitic behavior among colleagues.

In a statement, a BBC spokesperson noted that the corporation's processes did not uphold any of Kon's specific allegations of antisemitism. However, the outcome acknowledged shortcomings and the personal impact of the situation. The broadcaster described Kon as a valued member of staff with many years of dedicated service. Kon stated that the BBC is not institutionally antisemitic, a point the corporation cited with gratitude in its response.
