The NFL schedule reaches its unofficial midpoint this weekend, and the margin for error for contending teams has narrowed considerably. Five specific matchups on the Week 9 slate will determine whether several franchises maintain their postseason trajectories or face early elimination threats. SportsLine projections identify these games as having the highest stakes for the remaining two months of the regular season.

The NFC North stands out as the most competitive division in the league, with even the last-place Green Bay Packers, currently 5-3, holding a playoff position if the season ended today. Green Bay visits the New England Patriots on Sunday at 4:25 p.m. ET on Fox. Both teams are currently 5-3 and would enter the playoffs as No. 7 seeds in their respective conferences. This contest features quarterbacks Jordan Love and Drake Maye. The outcome will dictate momentum for a difficult upcoming stretch that includes games against the Lions, Chargers, Bills, Vikings, and Chiefs for New England, while Green Bay faces the Vikings and Rams.

In Washington, the 4-4 Los Angeles Rams host the Commanders at 1 p.m. ET on Fox. Although not an elimination game, a loss would drop the preseason Super Bowl favorites below .500. Los Angeles has won two straight games and aims for a third consecutive victory. Washington, which has a Week 10 matchup against the Giants, views this contest as a chance to boost its postseason hopes with an upset over the favored Rams.

The Chicago Bears host the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in a primetime game at 8:20 p.m. ET on NBC. Chicago seeks a fourth straight win to reach 7-2, following a recent blowout victory over the Seattle Seahawks. Tampa Bay, however, has won three of its last four games after a 0-4 start and is emerging as a frontrunner in the NFC South. The Buccaneers have relied on a strong running game and defensive performance to turn their season around against a division that includes the Bears.

The Seattle Seahawks host the Arizona Cardinals at 4:25 p.m. ET on Fox. Seattle, also 4-4, faces a critical test against a team that recently rallied to beat the Dallas Cowboys. A loss for the reigning champions would be a major setback given their slow start. Arizona is positioned as a potential spoiler, and its recent performance under quarterback Gardner Minshew suggests it can compete with elite opponents. Seattle’s defense must perform at a high level to secure the win.

International play resumes in Madrid with the Atlanta Falcons hosting the Cincinnati Bengals at 9:30 a.m. ET on NFL Network. This game offers both teams a chance to gain ground in their respective division races. A Falcons victory would help Atlanta stay competitive in the NFC South, particularly while division rivals like the Buccaneers and Panthers face difficult opponents. For Cincinnati, a win keeps them in the thick of the AFC North race.
